Donate from your Summer Garden

We welcome the surplus fresh fruits & vegetables grown in your garden.

Follow these easy steps and tips to ensure a successful drop off and distribution of your items to students and recipients. We appreciate your donation and cooperation.

  • Email in advance. Send a quick note to pantry@unl.edu at least 24 hours in advance, indicating your anticipated drop-off day and time and the produce varieties you will bring.
  • Donation days: Mondays & Wednesdays only, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • One drop-off location: Husker Pantry in the University Health Center (550 N. 19th St).
    • Do not put fresh fruits and veggies in the smaller donation bins located around campus nor bring to the pantry’s East Campus location.
  • Keep them dirty. Do not wash items before drop-off. We prefer fresh produce be dry and in the same condition it was harvested.
  • Highly requested items:
    • tomatoes
    • cucumbers
    • peas
    • peppers
    • summer squash and zucchini
    • beans
    • potatoes
    • corn (on the cob, in husks)
  • Items not accepted:
    • Melons
    • Berries
    • Exotic varieties or hard-to-cook items.
      • While we appreciate the talents of our local gardeners, the exotic items (e.g. okra, plantains) do not move off the shelves quickly enough before being past their prime. If you have questions, email us.
    • Processed items. Do not slice, peel, freeze, can, or preserve the fruits and vegetables. Items must remain in their fresh-just-harvested condition.
